Nov 12, 2014: MISSISSAUGA – On the 545th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, founder of Sikhism and the first of the Sikh gurus, Mississauga’s Seva Food Bank has collected more than $100,000 in pledges and 30,000 pounds of food.
To fight hunger, CJMP 1320 – a GTA-based multicultural radio station – hosted its fourth annual commercial-free radiothon during the Remembrance Day weekend and managed to collect some 30,000 pounds of food as well as over $100,000 in pledges.
“This incredible week will make a direct positive impact on the lives of our client families,” said Angie Rehal, one of the organizers at Seva Food Bank. “The food and funds collected allow us to not only feed more people but also tackle the issues of food security, hunger and poverty in our local community.”
In the campaign, some 250 volunteers participated to collect food donations at 20 different locations across the GTA region.
“We really wanted to find a way to put Guru Nanak’s message of equality, social justice and service into practice,” said Kuldip Deepak, CJMP 1320 radio host. “The Seva Food Bank is doing just that with its commitment to seva (service), selfless service, and its commitment to the well-being of all humanity.”
Those shows and programs, which participated in the campaign, include Asian Vision, Rangla Punjab, Parvasi, Punjab Di Goonj, Geetan Naal Preetan, Yahoo Radio, Fulkari, Sargam, Ajj Di Awaaz, Mehfil, Dil Apna Punjabi, Nav-Rang, Apna Punjab Radio, Road News Rangoli, and Sadda Virsa.
The Seva Food Bank first opened its doors in September 2010 and has grown to distribute over 40,000 pounds of food to over 500 families in need each month.
As part of the Mississauga Food Bank’s citywide network, it also provides safe, nutritious and culturally appropriate food from its Malton and Wolfedale Road locations.
