More turbaned Sikhs in Bollywood

CHANDIGARH: Akshay Kumar popularised the turbaned Sikh look in last year's blockbuster "Singh Is Kinng" and now Ranbir Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan will don turbans for their upcoming movies - a trend welcomed by the Punjabi film industry.

While Ranbir sports a turban for Shimit Amin's "Rocket Singh", Saif will be seen in the 'Sikh look' in his home production "Love Aaj Kal", which also stars Deepika Padukone.

Manmohan Singh, a prominent Punjabi filmmaker, is happy that the look has been adopted in Bollywood and accepted by audiences across India.

"Earlier, we had seen that a turbaned character is portrayed in a comical sense to add some humour to the movie. But now a turbaned hero sporting a beard is shown as a central character," Singh said.

Hindi films have earlier had Sikh protagonists but the instances have been few. Those who have played turbaned Sikhs in the past include superstar Amitabh Bachchan in "Ab Tumhare Hawale Watan Saathiyo", Sunny Deol in "Gadar-Ek Prem Katha", Ajay Devgan in "The Legend of Bhagat Singh" and Salman Khan in "Heroes".

"The influence of the Punjabi language and its values are undoubtedly growing rapidly throughout the world. In fact, wherever we went for shooting or promotion of our movies in Europe and the US, we have seen that foreigners are keen to know more about Punjabi culture, especially about turbans," said Singh, who is credited with modernising Punjabi cinema.

Singh has made successful films like "Jee Aayian Nu", "Asan Nun Maan Watna Da", "Yaran Nal Bahran", "Dil Apna Punjabi" and Miti Wajan Mardi". He is known for highlighting serious issues through his narratives.

Labh Janjua, a Punjabi singer who has made a mark in Bollywood with his rustic voice, is also upbeat about the prominence given to Sikhs in Hindi movies.

"Turbans and the Punjabi language are gaining prominence in both Bollywood and Hollywood. Besides seeing the protagonist of the movie sporting a turban, you can easily find a Punjabi song or inclusion of Punjabi dialogues to add colour to the movie," he said.

"Recently, I also got an offer from a Britain-based actor and director to sing a bouncy Punjabi number in his forthcoming English movie. I guess the day is not far when we'll see Hollywood stars wearing turbans too," quipped Janjua, who has crooned hit numbers like "Jee karda" in "Singh is Kinng" and "Hikknaal" in "Dev D".

Said Punjabi pop singer Amrinder Gill, who made his acting debut with Punjabi film "Munde UK De": "If I get a chance, I would happily flaunt a turban on the screen."

"The turban has its universal appeal as you can find a turbaned Sikh in every nook and corner of this world. So it is an attempt by Bollywood film producers to gain the attention of viewers worldwide," he added.

Said Jasbir Jassi, another renowned Punjabi singer: "It's really good to see Bollywood stars wearing turbans. It has now become a regular trend. Everyone wants to cash in on this concept, but we are happy that it is also helping to propagate Punjabi values among the masses."

But at the same time Bollywood filmmakers should be cautious to maintain the dignity of the turban while portraying it on screen, he added.

TURBANED SIKHS

MY DEAR MOHAJIT , I DON'T THINK THAT TILL DATE THERE HAS BEEN ANY MOVIE WITH A MAIN ACTOR AS A SIKH WITH FULL BEARD . ALL HAVE SHOWN TRIMMED SIKHS . SO I THAT THINK THESE WILL BE OF ANY USE IN PROMOTING SIKHI .

this is great..... till the

this is great..... till the time they are showing proper Sikhs with turbans and handsome uncut beards then it is a great way to propagate our religion and make more and more people aware of who we are and what we stand for as bollywood as a very large international audience.... RAJ KAREGA KHALSA.... Keep rocking my Sikh brothers and enlighten others by our powerful nature in order to make the world a better place and defeat the people who claim to be sikh (cutters and monas) but are a black mark on our religion.... TURBAN

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY A INSULT OF OUR RELIGION . TILL DATE I WAS VERY PROUD OF THE FACT THAT SIKHS WERE NOT PLAYING A MAJOR ROLE IN MOVIES WHICH PROMOTE PRE MARITAL AND EXTRA MARITAL SEX , GLAMOURIZE SMOKING AND PREACH THAT LOVE MEANS TO HAVE PHYSICAL RELATION AND ON TOP OF THAT THEY MAY HAVE LEADING ACTORS WEARIN THE TURBAN BUT THEY HAVE TRIMMED THERE BEARDS . ALL THESE R AGAINST THE REHAT MARYAADA WHICH A SIKH HAS TO FOLLOW . THE PEOPLE IN THE FILM INDUSTRY ARE CHARACHTERLESS BECOUSE OF THE INTIMATE SCENES WHICH THEY DO IN MOVIES JUST IN THE NAME OF BRINGING 'A REAL TOUCH ' . SO THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON TO BE PROUD OF INCREASE IN THE NUMBER OF TURBANED SIKHS IN FILM INDUSTRY . TILL NOW WE WERE NOT A PART OF THIS MAD BAD INDUSTRY BUT NOW I FEEL ASHAMED OF THE FACT THAT EVEN WE R BECOMIN A PART OF IT

Turban

I reckon Ranvir Kapoor looks better in the turban than the previous lots(sunny, akshay)etc

It has more too it

Dear pals, The fact is turbans have been popular since long; way back famous comedian "Peter Sellers" the star of "Pink Panther" movie had his album released as a singer with the cover picture showing him dresssed as a sikh where in worlds like "Punjab" can be heard loud & clear; thus signifies the popularity of our culture & heritage.Even small rolls had been shown with side actors in the Hollywood displaying themselves as Sikhs & are shown wearing Turbans in USA. Our Famous 007 series has Mr. Kabir Bedi as a SIKH in Octopussy Movie. And who can forget "Mind Your Language" a U.K. television series showing Albert Mosses as a Sikh. MY dear friends (Singers) are nither too well informed nor have any through knowledge of the subject but have a vague idea of the past decade only. More over people like Amrinder Gill who says they can portray & play a character of a Turbaned Sikh in the movie if script demands but seems to be lost in the real world where as per the tenth Guru he is chosen by birth to play the same role but is miles away, he should stop day deaming & should not pass loose comments. If you now talk of Bollywood you have Pictures dating back in the 60s & 70s where Sikhs have been shown in good spirit & not in a comic roll with Dharminder, Dara Singh, Prithvi Raj Kapoor, Kunal Kapoor(son of Shahi Kapoor in "Vijeta"), Amitabh Bachan doing some very good rolls & caring their turbans with grace. Mr. Akshay Kumar has done a great job by certainly adding another feather in the academic cap but the trend had already picked up with a commedable recognition of Sunny Deol in "Border" as Major Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri. If you have more please let me know & further add on.

Dignity and Pride!

I guess the last line is more important than anything else in the article. "But at the same time Bollywood filmmakers should be cautious to maintain the dignity of the turban while portraying it on screen, he added. "

Turbans

Punjabi Diaspora has settled in Western countries for almost 40 + years. Most Western people have come to distinguish Sikh Turban from turbans worn by people from Middle East and other cultures. In USA and Some European countries college going students are popularising Sikh Turbans. It is good thing that Bollywood is cashing on that.A few years back some friends and we went to Baja California near Ensanada Mexico for a vacation. Our Beach house was next to a Club. All night they were playing "Tu Hunen Hunen hoie mutiar, Mundian kolon bach ke rahin" or something like that.It was so amusing and exilirating.Sat Siri Akal
