Wednesday, February 26, 2014: Ferozepur, the land of martyrs, is undoubtedly a historical city. Ferozepur, which once was an important trade centre before Independence, has now lost its importance after 1971 Indo-Pakistan war. Ferozepur has many places, which holds great historical importance, but due to some inadvertent reasons, even the local residents are not aware about them.

One of these historical places is the local Sikh Kanya Mahavidyalaya, situated near Amritsari Gate of the city which was founded by Sardar Takhat Singh (1870-1937) in 1904. Sardar Takhat Singh was the maternal grandfather of famous film star Yogita Bali, wife of famous film actor Shammi Kapoor. Yogita Bali was also a student of Sikh Kanya Mahavidyalaya.

Aditya Raj Kapoor, son of Shammi Kapoor visited SKMV on October 29 last year along with his wife Preeti Kapoor.

The SKMV was initially started at Mohalla Bawian Wala but later it was shifted to a Haveli, known then as “Jubliee Haveli”, constructed over 6-7 acres of land.

This institution was one of the premier institutions of this region. The school was established concerning future of Sikh girl students. In 1906 the Maharaj of Nabha, himself came to see this school, where was taught to the Sikh girls students. The design of the building of the school is based on Khalsa College, Amritsar which depicts Indo-Mughal architecture.

In 1988, floods destroyed the valuable books in library and important manuscript were shifted to Punjabi University, Patiala.

In recent years, the school has been derailed from its historic track. The strength of the student has decreased. The building, which should have been preserved by the Archeological Department, now in a shambles which depicts failure in preserving the historical culture.
