Be Alert (OP-ED)

The spiritual teacher may be false, but the student's devotion carries him through

I was sitting at a historic Gurudwara Sahib.  A young couple had just walked in and they sat next to me.  A Sikh jathedar or sewadar came up to them and told the husband “Baba ji is remembering you and wants to meet you.” The wife seemed interested, like she was ready and go and meet the Baba Ji.  The husband was little reluctant.  He said he was not interested to meet the Baba ji.

The following night I kept on thinking to myself.  What would have happened?  Maybe it was my dirty brain.  Sadly, so many babas have come into our world.  We do not want to believe the Guru Granth Sahib, instead believe babas, deras, etc.

Life is so fragile.  We seek solace in these deras.  I know of a Sikh gentleman.  He was very close to one such baba ji.  After he left one baba ji, he would seek another baba.  Maybe, that is what his life was.

Let’s agree; who does not want to enjoy life?  If you are vulnerable, babas will exploit you.  One Sikh told me you do not have to have knowledge.  You do not need experience.  You only have to talk big.  People will be swayed.

Guru Nanak has rightly said:

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ 1 ॥
salok mahalaa pehilaa ||

Shalok, First Mehla:

giaan vihoonaa gaavai geet ||

The one who lacks spiritual wisdom sings religious songs.

bhukhe mulaa(n) ghare maseet ||

The hungry Mullah turns his home into a mosque.

makhaToo hoi kai ka(n)n paRaae ||

The lazy derelict has his ears pierced to look like a Yogi.

fakar kare hor jaat gavaae ||

Someone else becomes a panhandler and loses his social status.

gur peer sadhaae ma(n)gan jai ||

One who calls himself a guru or a spiritual teacher when he goes around begging

taa kai mool na lageeaai pai ||

- don't ever touch his feet.

ghaal khai kichh hathahu dhei ||

One who works for what he eats and gives some of what he has

naanak raahu pachhaaneh sei ||1||

- O Nanak, he knows the Path. ||1||

Let’s look at our history.  Guru Sahibian have asked us to have faith in one God.  To believe in Guru Granth Sahib.  But babas jis are doing the katha.  Yes, listen to the katha but do not serve Baba ji’s needs.  This is the new tactic they are using to sway you.  Who does not want to enjoy you?  They know women are vulnerable.  You can sway them easily.  They will try to divide you.  Bring differences in your family life so that they can use you or abuse you.”

One lady I know, used to serve a baba blindly.  She would gladly make “paranthas” for the Baba.  Her husband was very nice.  He would just eat cereal.  I am a Baba too.  I want to enjoy too.  Come on.  If you have a twitch “Come to me, sweetheart.” Serve me.  Make me “paranthas.”

These so called “Babas” are sexually active.  They are experienced to bring differences in your home.  Break your home and enjoy themselves.  Always chose your family over these babas. Spend time with your family.  Life is very short.  I hope you do not destroy your home and your family for these babas.  One famous Ragi did very good Kirtan.  He stayed as a guest at one home.  When he left, the host’s wife also went with him.  Always love each other.  There is a world out there to destroy your family, your love, your marriage and your home.

One respected Sikh had never encouraged my work. He had never advertised in our magazine, but was bold enough to ask me to teach at his “Sikh School.”  I asked him how much would I be paid?  He said, “It is volunteer.”  I thought he has a big house.  Big business.  But he wants me to volunteer.  So he should probably arrange for an apartment in his home and food for me if I am volunteering.  Why is money important?  You can read the definition of it in a dictionary.  Why would you work when your service is not “measured by your value on the market?”

1. A medium that can be exchanged for goods and services and is used as a measure of their values on the market, including among its forms a commodity such as gold, an officially issued coin or note, or a deposit in a checking account or other readily liquefiable account.

2. The official currency, coins, and negotiable paper notes issued by a government.

My wife’s family was influenced by a baba ji.  The baba ji was visiting Seattle.  Preparations started in my house days before his arrival.  Baba ji didn’t like the color black.  One of my recliners that was black got covered in white sheet.  Baba ji was going to stay only for a few hours.  I took a day off from work to welcome the Baba ji.  I received him at the airport with a bouquet of flowers.  One of his disciples was with him.  He was wanting me to bow my full body “dandaut” for him and offer him money.  One of his other guests was also with him.  When he drank milk, it was poured from one foot above his mouth while he sat with his feet on the table. I somehow felt fooled to have taken my day off from work for him. Forcing me to do “dandaut” had pissed me off already.  Later I learnt he was in Seattle on a business trip and wanted to influence his clients.  Ever since then, I lost respect for all the babas.  They live a luxurious life, enjoy Mercedes cars, fly business class, influence us to do “dandaut” and offer them money.  They influence our wives and daughters to fulfill their dirty desires.  They ask us to volunteer in the name of SEWA.  People have established businesses under SEWA.  They collect money – all in the pretext of SEWA.  I wish we would open our eyes to understand these corrupt, bureaucrat babas who have been playing with our innocence and our feelings.

Recently, I learnt about an announcement for a Fellowship by a reputed Sikh Organization.  It had a stipend for $1000. I decided to apply for it.  I received an email “Letter of Rejection.”  Not that I was expecting much.  The interesting part was I got the “Letter of Rejection”  before the deadline.  I am 57 year old.  I have received thousands of rejections.  This is probably the only time I got the rejection letter  before the job application deadline.  Sadly, it came from a Sikh organization and the amount was only $1000. I am sure lot of you will read this article.  The deadline was February 28th.  I had applied on February 26th.  I received the “Letter of Rejection” on February 27th.  They have not only maligned the Sikh institute but also the respected name under which the Fellowship was announced.

When you decide to donate; donate to an individual who is doing something for the community. If you want to do sewa; go with your family to Gurudwara Sahib.  Listen to Kirtan.  Do sewa in the langar.  I have seen lot of such Babas whose main interest is to ruin your family.  They will bring conflicts in your family.  Please do not ruin your family for these babas.  How do you recognize these babas?  If they are directing you to the Guru, to The Gurudwara Sahib, consider them good.

Have you experienced anything similar?  If so, please share your experiences in the comments below.  I look forward to reading them.
