Bana

April 15th, 2009 by Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogiji

Guru Gobind Singh, at the time of Baisakhi, is known to have asked for heads. The test was to see whether people who claimed that they belonged to the Guru came through or not. Five came and passed the test. To those who offered their heads, Guru Gobind Singh did not give the Amrit. He first gave them the bana. It was the foundation stone laid for the beginning of the most beautiful consciousness, the Khalsa. Dress has a very unique power in it. It gives you confirmation in relation to the world around you. It gives you spirit and power to relate in your grace and your values to the values around you.

Guru Gobind Singh had mastery, therefore he cut through the mystery of time and space. He gave us the bana, then Amrit, and later the Siri Guru Granth as banee. Now this fact and eventful situation is twisted by different people to serve different purposes, and it is sometimes very confusing. However, we belong to the land of free people and our caliber cannot accept slavery. Therefore we must not value social pressure. Social pressure is meant for those who are mentally bankrupt of their spirit and values. Sometimes people feel that if you wear a three-piece suit that you will look socially impressive.

I ask you, what social impression do you want to create when you are mentally a coward and spiritually bankrupt?
You must live with your values. If your children see you are in duality with your concept of life, it is enough reason for them to hate you. Your generation could not live with bankruptcy of spirituality and truth. You could not live with demagogy and clever moves. Learn from your own lesson. Live inside and outside alike so that your own born may find the unison of your caliber as a human being and give you respect.

The greatest philosophy on which this Dharma lives is fearlessness. We have no political allegiance because we have no seat to win. Our mission is simply to serve humanity and to conquer the heart of every human being so that everybody on this earth can live healthy, happy and holy. As our extended goal does not recognize boundaries, so we do not recognize boundaries. Therefore, you must remember, when you fault in bana you de-value the sacrifice of the five beloved ones.

You have to look distinct. Guru Gobind Singh has said it clearly. When there will be living in you a very distinct, disciplined life, Guru Gobind Singh promises that he will inject in you the entire cosmic power of radiance and spirit. So it is in your hands how grateful you can be to live a wonderful human life. There is no use in living half-minded. Value not social pressures, my friends, they have always been exerted on all men of God.

Therefore, on his day, I'd like to let you know that we will serve everybody for all time to come, but in the house of Guru Gobind Singh, those alone shall be accepted who walk on the tenets of the Rahit Maryaadaa given by the great Master. If you want to live as a liberated human being, which is called in the scriptures Jeevan Mukht, follow the path very carefully, and gracefully, distinctly enough that you can all the time feel that you belong to someone who is someone to God. I hope the few words I have shared with you from the depths of my heart shall be of value to you in the course which you have adopted to live.

Arti ji!! I really thank u for sharing this

Arti ji!! I really thank u for sharing this story with the cyber sangat.... Can u please share the source of this story as I'm really saddened by this.... I'm really saddened that this SOB, monster got the priceless gift of Amrit and Bana..... I'm really saddened..... BTW both the boys who burnt him are clean-shaven.... http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3115/2813881069_016a1e272e.jpg?v=0 ..... My god!! those boys should get gallantry award and should be honoured for eliminating a curse like this.... What moral do we have from this story : "One nihang has brought shame to the entire nihang community !!" .. Ideally speaking!! people should feel secure if they see a Nihang around themselves "Jahaan-jahaan khalsa ji sahib, tahaan-tahaan rachheya rehayeet".... But stories like this actually make you feel insecured by their presence around you.... I still doubt that whether this psudo-nihang was created by some anti-sikh body or he bacame corrupt by the delusions of gradeur.... If nihangs can be prepared by anti-sikh forces, preparing other sikhs isn't tough for them either.... in order to infiltrate in the panthinc-affairs.... I actually have heard that employees of secret govt. agencies like CBI, RAW, ISI dodge people by grooming themselves for long-term to solve a particular case !!.... But! what are sikhs doing to curb/ check such mocking ???? For sure!! there are bad elements within every community but other communities capitalize on it to weaken it.... I'm sure many anti-sikh communities must have capitalized on poohla's misconduct to malign the sikh-community worldwide!! I don't know nihangs personally, but I'm sure that if one nihang has turned out to be bad, I shouldn't assume that all nihangs are bad !! Anyways! an open mind and heart are the pre-requisites to live in the 21st century..... Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh !!

Harman saab ji.Look at the purpose of this story.

Harman saab ji i am wondering that you live in guru ke nagari and you did not know about poohla known as big black cat in sikh circles from arround eightys. We have lot of info on different sites and magzines. They tell you all how he got power with the help of gov of india and how he help the gov to kill young sikhs in or after eightys. There is one rasala i know SHAMSERAY DASAT this one is printed in amritsar.they print every thing in detail.Harman is this not amazing that you have lot of info about sikhi how this not go throug your eyes before.Go to nihang community they will tell you who the hell he is.Bahi navtej singh (guggu)and bahi harchand singh(marikambo) got lot of awards from sikhs arround the world.Iron cuts the iron in that way this very long story they print the book known as AAT THE AANT may be you find in amritsar there book shop is near langar hall dukan #22.near pani wali tanki amritsar.I hope the purpose of person who writte this here is very clear that all sikhs in bana is like phoola. The answer is gov use lot of phoolas to kill sikhs at that time.

Nimana ji!! I knew a little bit about it

Nimana ji!! I knew a little bit about it... I just knew that Poohla was a really corrupt and spoilt pseudo-nihung .... ang the day he died .... many people were really happy about it.... And I really wondedred why people including sikhs are happy on somebody's death.... But, now I realize that their joy was justified as I wasn't aware of the vices he had done!! Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh !!

Harman ji,thanks.please go

Bana enhances image of a Sikh and Sikhi!

Even though I never met him in real life, I think Siri Singh Sahib was a great Sikh role model when it comes to wearing bana. Sometimes, I wonder why modern India doesn't really teach people and care about preserving Indian Hindu and Sikh Traditions like teaching yoga, Persian, Sanskrit, ayurvedic etc. and teach people about leaders like our great Gurus, Bhagats and great Sikhs like Siri Singh Sahib, Bhagat Pooran Singh, Mai Bhago, Bibi Inderjit Kaur (wife of Yogi Bhajan), Bibi Inderjot Kaur (Pingalwara), Baba Deep Singh, Banda Singh Bahadur, Bhai Ghanaiya and many other great Kirtan jathas, sevadaars etc. escape my mind. Ideally a full time bana is what a true Sikh should wear, either a Nihang style or Kurta Pajama or a salwar-kameez. We have all seen calendars and paintings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji portrayed in both styles with chooridar pajama with kamarkasa and a nihang bana. I think kamarkasa around the kamar looks great on people but a very few sikhs these days wear it, even though it is shown in artist paintings. May be it was worn during war times only. The people that wear full time bana or simple kurta pajama or dhoti or chadar like farmers along with humility, honesty, character, seva, simplicity, hard work and those that follow other Sikh principles are my ideal role models. Then come the people like myself, who wear mix clothing with western and Indian. I guess I have not reached that level yet where I can wear full time bana and still kind of live in duality and would qualify myself as a coward or spiritually blind. What I don't like are the hypocrites that take Amrit and wear bana but still talk down and rude to people, become Gurdwara managers etc. but still use caste names instead of Singh and Kaur or Khalsa, still discriminate and don't encourage or give oportunities to women, children and non Sikhs to learn and lead seva, simran, nitnem and ardas in Gurdwaras. Still discriminate based on social class like treating a President or Pope or a celebrity differently than a homeless or a begger or a poor and are still under the influence of maya like living posh and showy lifestyles instead of simple living, don't open up their minds. Surprisingly and sadly, our own SGPC sent girls with jeans home which sets a bad example of hypocracy and dscrimination in Sikhi when it comes to treatment of women and girls. why not send boys home as well. This is teh kind of hypocracy I am talking about above.

Bana

Harman ji, you have raised some interesting issues. I have a question also. Is there evolution in Sikhi? What is permanent and what is not? Hardev Singh

Hardev Singh ji !!

Hardev Singh ji!! I have not raised any issue here.... Though I have been very fortunate for not having been discriminated on the grounds of clothing.... Last time I wore a full-fledged Nihang Bana was when I was around 8 yrs. old and I dressed up as a Nihang in Nagar Kirtan by wearing a beautiful basanti-coloured bana.... and I looked cute :) ..... But I don't think if I wear a Bana now at the age 25, I'll look cute at this time.... LOL .... I didn't try to raise an issue here but with all due respect, it's your comment that brought up a term called "Evolution in Sikhi...." I mean I do agree with it to some extent... Well!! evolution would happen only and only if the sikh-symbols and principles are revered and a person accepts them as their ideals and lives to improve him/ herself as every day progresses..... Now for the question "What is permanent and what is not?"..... Permanent is the one and only GOD who is omnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient.... rest everything is impermanent.... Hope my comment answered your questions.... Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh !!

Sikh Bana

VAHEGURU JI KA KHALSA, VAHEGURU JI KI FATEH An interesting read on Sikh bana - http://www.amritworld.com/main/nihang/nihang/ - check under Nihang dress. Some interesting observations.

I'm really sorry for this comment.....

I'm really sorry for this comment that I'm posting today but..... I won't be wrong if I say here that it seems like a mirage sometimes.. The closer you go, you realise there's nothing and u walk miles chasing nothing which you think is there.... Where will this END ?? I see no difference in people sometimes who don't even keep their hair and sometimes who are pooran sikhs in a Bana carrying 5 k's.... Though I feel mysterious about how they're socially and professionally on the move which leads me to the conclusion that it's all about carrying yourself with confidence.... and Usually people get confident with stylish haircuts and clothing ... Does bana give you some extra confidence ??.... Something which remains at the core is the feeling of being confident about yourself.... BANA looks really elegant but to call some other dress less elegant than Bana, won't that be discriminatory ???? I am a pooran gursikh carrying 5 k's... I wear jeans, pants, cargo, T-shirts, kurta-payjama etc.... Does that make me a lesser sikh tan the one who wears a BANA.... And as per the radiance and projection... To some extent I can agree with it.... But we see very less urban/ rural sikhs in Bana in India these days..... or in short it is a trend that needs to be revived here in Punjab.... where even a basic thing like turban is considered outdated.... honestly speaking !! Bana goes too far as per the pragmatic approach towards day to day life in India is concerned!! I f still someone can do it..... That'll be more than commendable..... Even in the sikh schools and colleges, BANA cannot be made compulsory, take that for granted..... Social pressure!! as mentioned in this article.!!... Do you think it applies only to the people who wear a bana ?? Don't you think that even keshdhari sikhs have to undergo Social pressure ?? Even amritdhari sikhs wearing a GAATRA outside their shirts and not underneath are looked down and considered backward.... or potential priests or terrorists and not as potential competent professionalas!! I think these are all side-effects of GLOBALISATION that being conservative for your culture becomes a curse sometimes and western-culture becomes the yardstick to judge a person's status.... Not just punjabis and sikhism, these problems would be common to every culture in the world as an adverse effect of Globalisation !! Never knew the LPG (Liberalisation, Privatization and Globalization) would actually become a fuel like LPG (Liquiefied Prtroleum Gas) that would burn the pride and honour of our local cultures into the ashes of shame... and threaten our long-term existence.... Who knows Sikhism survives another 100 yrs., 120 yrs. or 150 yrs...... Who knows sikhism/ khalsahood becomes history forever ?? Who knows the future.... Just a verse from a DOHRA : "Raj karega Khalsa, aaki rahe na koye".... Is that verse enough to restore our faiths in the longevity of our panth ?? If it is, then it would be BLIND faith..........and I can just comment that "If it is not blind, it's not faith"..... it becomes logic .... Does someone have an answer ?? Waheguru ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru ji ki Fateh !!

Bana – Sikhi Dress Code

Harman ji, I sympathise with your frustration and I agree with much of what you say but not with every point you make and the same goes for respected Yogi Jis article. You are right we have to a certain extent move with the times and also look at the practical aspects of sustaining our beliefs. I have, well over sixty years, met Sikhs from all walks of life and seen a lot of change and many offshoots of Sikhism cropping up, creating divisions in our young but unique faith. I have always worn a turban and never showed disrespect to my hair and took initiation when I was in my early twenties. So I trust I know what I am talking about. I hope my comments below would help. I seek forgiveness, in advance, for any misquotation of Gurbani or any points which may hurt the feelings of a fellow Sikh. Every person inspiring to be a Sikh must be encouraged to take ‘khandey di pahul’ i.e. formal initiation into the Khalsa Order, provided of course the individual is ready and qualified for the initiation. Generally, a turban and uncut hair are sufficient to identify one as a Sikh. An amritdhari Sikh, obviously, will also wear the other Ks. Whether the kirpan is worn under or over the garments should not be an issue. Provided you can be identified as a Sikh, it should be sufficient even if it means you are dressed in a suit (coat and trousers) or casuals. OF COURSE THE CLOTHING MUST BE WORN TO CONFORM TO NORMAL CODES OF DECENCY. The radiance (within and outside) comes from good deeds and not just clothes. Since you are already identified as a Sikh any further distinction, in my humble opinion, must be by means of your actions which will speak much louder then words or symbolic clothing. Why do we want to look so different from the rest of the world? How will the design of your shirt or trousers (as long they are decent and cover your body adequately) affect your thought process or your actions? Surely the rest of the dress code should relate to the mind. Guru Nanak Patshah says that there is a danger that the souls ’‘fabric’ is conditioned by Maya, i.e. this cloth is dyed in greed. My Lord cannot be pleased by such clothing. How will the soul-bride appease the Lord? (ih tan maaeyaa paaheyaa piaarey leetrrhaa lab rangaa-ey; mayrae kant na bhaavae cholrrhaa piaarey kio dhan sayjae jaa-ey – GGS 722). Submit yourself to the merciful Lord – hanu kurbaanae jaa-o meharvaanaa hanu kurbaanae jaa-o. If the body has to be dyed, O beloved, then do so with a dye drenched in Lord’s Name - kaaeyaa rangan jay thee-ae peaaray paa-ee-ae naa-o majeeth. This brand of colour is outside this world, never seen before (rangan vaalaa jay rangae saahib aisaa rang na deeth). Only souls so dyed are acceptable to the Lord - jin kay cholay ratrrhay piaaray kant tinaa kai paas. You know you are Sikh when you wear the 5 Ks. THE NEXT STEP IS TO SING, LISTEN AND READ GURU’S SHABAD (PARABH BANEE SABAD SUBHAAKHIAA. GAAVHU SUNHU PARHAHU NIT BHAA-EE GUR POORAI TOO RAAKHI-AA. RAHAA-O - LORD’S PRAISES AS ENSHRINED IN THE GURU’S SHABAD ARE THE BEST UTTERANCES; SO CONSTANTLY SING THEM, LISTEN TO THEM, AND READ THEM – GGS 611). This should be adequate to give you the glow and the inner strength? Do you have to draw additional attention and make a statement “look I am Sikh and I am holier than thou? Why do you need to make a religious statement every day over and above the basic distinguishing marks (hair and turban) which are more than sufficient? Does this not amount to exhibitionism? The rest of the distinction must be through your actions – the world certainly will know who you are. We have enough problems as it is. An amritdhari Sikh, with full bana, thinks he is holier than an amritdhari who dresses in contemporary mode of clothing. The amritdhari Sikh wearing ordinary clothing looks down upon a non-amritdhari who otherwise displays a turban and uncut hair. The latter thinks he is superior to the one who wears a turban but trims his beard. The one who trims his beard thinks the shaven Sikh is an inferior Sikh…….Where will it end? We keep judging by appearance and little attention is paid to the inner soul of the individual. The big irony is even Gurdwaras and Deras have their particular mode of bana – like a school uniform. They must also distinguish themselves from other banas. In one Gurdwara, I know of, granthis have strict instructions to totally cover their faces with a ‘thathaa’ (wide strip of cloth tied over the mouth) – I am not here referring to the parna which is a standard code for every granthi. It goes on and on and on …. creating divisions, deterring many away from the Gurdwaras, driving the youth away from Sikhism. I personally know totally clean shaven persons of Sikh origin who read and listen to Gurbani daily and are otherwise super human beings and yet I also see amritdharis on their high horses generating anti-social behaviour devoid of true love and devotion. Give me the former any day. Bana is not only an external matter, dress up your mind with the true bana as well (refer to GGS 722). Respectfully yours 'Arshi'.

Does bana give you some extra confidence ?

Yes! It forces you to gain confidence in who you are. If you are not represented by bana, then it forces you to realize that. If you stand by the Guru's bana, then it forces you to gain confidence in that.
I speak from experience, because I wear bana everyday in a professional job in the USA. Although I did face social pressures, like you mention, from wearing my turban my whole life, I didn't conquer the pain and abuse I faced, and the small-mindedness of others until I fully accepted my identity in the face of anything and everything. That is the strength that bana has. You must face yourself and others with a full understanding of who you are and what you represent.
I'll also say that, to wear bana everyday, you will nearly have to become perfect, because there is no hiding when you wear bana. Every action you take, every word you speak is noticed, which also gives it more power, but requires greater responsibility and humility. You must walk this path to represent it. You will be tested, but by the grace of the Guru, in addition to bana we also have bani, seva, and simran which will carry you through anything.
