Bhai Gyan Singh Ji, in his 90s hails from Kapurthala.
He is one of the last of the old school Ragis still alive, who identify
strongly with the Rababi style of Kirtan that was prevalent before the
partition of India in 1947. Bhai Gyan Singh Ji is particularly fond of
singing shabads in the Kafi ang, a light classical style of singing, most
compositions usually set to Raga Kafi or a variant, usually in a 14 beat
rhythmic cycle called Deepchandi. .
The kirtan was recorded live, in the huzuri of the Sri
Guru Granth Sahib at the Bridgewater Gurdwara & in private sessions
in New Jersey in the mid 1990s
