Social Activism in Sikhī Presenter: Palbinder Kaur Session Date: 24 Oct 2009 Session Time: 11:00 am -12:30 pm CST Session Fee: $10 ($5 students) Session Details: This presentation will explore Guru Nanak’s vision of creating a community of socially active and spiritually conscious individuals. It will cover the philosophical and historical development of this vision by subsequent Gurus, leading to the present day reality of the Sikh community. The central theme of this presentation will be to explore the barriers to social change, and how Sikhism can help us overcome those barriers. Presenter Information: Palbinder Kaur Shergill is a lawyer and mediator. She was called to the British Columbia bar in 1991. As part of her volunteer work, Palbinder is the General Legal Counsel for the World Sikh Organization, and has appeared as counsel before the Supreme Court of Canada, in landmark human rights cases. Palbinder is a frequent media commentator and speaker on issues relating to law, politics and human rights. She is a recipient of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal for Community Service, and lives in Surrey, B.C. with her husband and 3 children.
