Donation
& Society

Few days back, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee (SGPC) passed it’s annual budget of Rs905 crore for 2014-15 fiscal year. This is true that take care of Gurdwaras is done by donation made by people of Sikh community. Same as taken care of many other Gurdwaras in the Punjab and the world is done with charity and donation only.
The largest temples of India such as Balaji (Andra Pradesh), Sai Mandir (Maharashtra), Vaishno Devi (Jammu & Kashmir) etc also receive billion of rupees in sake of charity.
In the world, largest amount of money is donated in the name of God and religion. But is this donated money utilized for the beneficial of society? We donate money to get heaven after death. Do we have any responsibility towards our nation and people?
If we donate in sake of God then God lives inside the human beings. Giving the money to destitute is equivalent to putting it into the steel bin of God. Helping the needy and poor people is the biggest charity.
The religious preaching is also done with the donation we do. But how much religious is preached ? we all are well known to it. Almost 75% of young generation is addicted to drugs in Punjab. Approximately Rs34 Crore of alcohol bottles were sold in one year (2013-14). In 2015-16, Government of Punjab made about Rs.325 crore incomes from the tenders of liquor stores. Every businessman and politician is now trying to buy at least one or two liquor stores. Government of Punjab is getting 33% of income from liquor selling tax. Our youth is deviating. They are unemployed and thoughtless.
As 3 to14 year old children from our neighbouring country China are getting trained in games and proudly present their country in the world, in the same way our 14 to 16 year kids are roaming vagabond and become reason of sorrow for society and parents.
Few of them are intelligent in studies. In this competitive world, average students are unsuccessful to get good jobs.
Our children also have the ability to win Olympic medals. Average children may can make carrier in games. But neither government nor parents seriously interested in games. If parents and children both are serious about games then our country don’t have proper playground, coach, and other necessary things. Private coaching is so expensive that is unaffordable for middle class. Money is only consuming on kabbadi and cricket in Punjab and India respectively. Other games such as hockey, badminton, table-tennis, lawn tennis, swimming, shooting, athletic and for many other games, we don’t have the world class stadium, coaches, and the necessary utilities.
The charity we do in sake of God is good. But if we do 1% of it for game accessories, ground, and coaching then not only in Olympics but in every game our children and youth can show their talent to the world and pride their parents, society, and country.
Think about it…..

Harwinder Ji,

You are right on one angle. We need to spend on sports for better player. But there are lots of other angles we need to see from Gurdwara donation. To see all angles we need Guru’s teaching vision. To run Gurdwara there are many expenses involved like Electricity, Water, Mortgage, Maintenance, Langar, staff Salary and many more. We need donation for all of these. Yes, we can do much better with donation.

Few things I noticed.

1. We are not concerned about Bhai Jis and Ragis qualification and standard of living. In today’s Gurdwara we hire Bhai Jis and Ragis on very less salary or without salary. And ask them to stay in Gurdwara and leave their families back home. The Bhai Jis and Ragis are like us, they have families. They want good education and clothes for their kids. Why we make their lower standard. Good Bhai Jis and Ragis can give us right direction for Guru’s Path and elevate our children for spiritual life. We need to re-think about Bhai Jis and Ragais and use donation properly for their education and well compensation who are building our spiritual future.

2. We are not concerned about our children religious education like tabla class, harmonium class, kirtan class, punjabi class, gurbani class, gatka class, turban classes, history presentation, some yoga or health class and rewards for competition etc. When our children follow Guru’s teaching then they are going for clubs, drugs and other bad things. Their elevated mind can change world for betterment. We need to re-think about our children religious education and use donation for their class so that they become good person and spread good message.

3. We are not concerned about to spread Guru Nanak’s message around the world in right way. We need good documentaries, movies, good person who can talk in different culture. We need lots of donation to spread message of truth.

4. We are not concerned about human rights violation against sikh all around the world. We need losts of donation to fight for human rights. In France sikh kids are not allowed to go in public school with their turban.

5. We are not concerned about participation in Gurdwara management and encourage sangat to do kirtan and involve everyone to sing along and install projector. If we involve our self in local Gurdwara’s work and kirtan and do some betterment for our local community then we can spread this message to other Gurdwara also.

There are many things we need to improve with donation, which ultimately change our mind set according to Guru’s teaching. We can open good school and guide new generation according to Guru’s teaching to make our world better. Then all problems will go automatically. We need to make our roots strong so that we can build prosperous future.
