@ A student:

Oh really, people can't do Japji Sahib at anytime they like apart from morning?
Please do not confuse people with comments like these. Sikhism is not a fear based religion where if we don't follow things properly (as some people say), our life will start going downwards. Sikhism is a religion of love toward God.. Nothing more nothing less..

As for banis, they are the prescribed minimum for everyday. If somebody also wants to read them at there times of the day, its great.. We are free to do as much more as we can throughout the day apart from the nitnem.

Nitmen gives us guidance everyday.. mere recital without any contemplation will not lead us anywhere..
Morning banis kick-start our day with devotion towards God. They tell us the qualities of God which we should remember throughout the day. After Japji and Jaap Sahib, Swaiye gives us guidance that we should not have ego of what we do throughout the day and then we ask for protection from God in Choupai Sahib. It then gets over by deriving a feeling of bliss from Anand Sahib.

In the evening, Rehraas means a way of life which gives us guidance after the day's work and Sohila in the night helps us sign off for the day.

Instead of just reciting, if we understand the theme of the banis, these confusions will never occur. However, if you need inspiration at anytime of the day, you are welcome to read any bani which could answer your questions. Just one point to remember here that mere recital like a mantra will not give us any inspiration, understanding and applying it in our lifes will.

AMRIT VELA SACH NAO WADIIE WICHAR. MEANS WHEN EVER ONE PRAISES AND CONTEMPLATES ABOUT GOD IS A SACRED TIME. ACCORDING TO THAT EVERY TIME IS A GOOD TIME. ANYONE WHO DOES PATH ALL THE TIME IS A DIVINE PERSON. SO ANY TIME IS AS GOOD AS YOU DO IT.

Moderator Note: Upper case is like shouting. We do not allow it. Everyone, please remember that, even though the writers may fail to mention it, the messages on a discussion forum are personal views unless they were supported with proper references.

Satsriakal To all
What i have learnt till now is that amritvela has its own importance, to do patth during amritvela really helps us a lot, because at that time of the day we are able to concentrate very well on Waheguru ji, because at that time its silence every where and the waves of the thoughts of people are extremely low, and there's also a sakhi upon amritvela .. of Guru Nanak Dev ji's time, about kalyug, only those people can wake up early who are blessed by Waheguru to wakeup early and connect to Waheguru ji, its also about priority, sometime we think like there is lot of time like in evening.. we can do patth later, that is we do late intentionally, believe it.. if you will give Waheguru ji the first priority.. you will never be in the last position anywhere in your life.. and about setting time.. its good to do so if we can, sikhi is also about maintaining discipline in life. Apart from Nitnem Sahib, we can do patth as much as we want at any time of the day. Anyhow, whenever we do patth, we should do it by heart.. not forcefully.

Thanks
Satsriakal to all

ssa,

- any gurbani can be contemplated upon at any time of the day , and that is the amrit vela.

- the present maryada was being followed at random by various mahants, udassies, nirmalas or other so called clergy of sikhs in the olden times. these 'rituals' were formalised when sgpc came into existence.

- gurbani is not a mantra . its rote recitation at any time can have no negative effect on an individual. contemplation on gurbani at any time will always have positive effect.

- doing paath means obeying the rules of gurmat in your routine dealings with everyone.

- gawiey does not mean literal singing. it is displaying its practice in every action and thought.

- please try to substitute 'law , principle' for the word 'naam' instead of 'name' , it will give us an easier and a more practical meaning of any line of gurbani.

- kathaa's , experiences and saakhies etc should be taken with a pinch of salt.

- crux is that basic task of gurbani is to 'change your ATTITUDE' . more you contemplatively read or recite it as a nitnem, more will you benefit. it is more of an auto-suggestion to cleanse ourselves and our thoughts.

David jee. thanks for your comments. that is the real path and whenever the time demanded it. he did it. it is a state of mind. so do it whenever the time permits. although the sikh rahat maryada calls different path at different times. but that is to guide the person to get into it but do any path at any time if your mind can be tuned to it.

Excellent point and one that way too many Sikhs don't understand/ put into practice.

WJKK WJKF,

In the Bhai Nand Lal Ji's rehits, I believe Guru Gobind Singh Ji also instructed us to do Jap Ji sahib and Jaap Sahib in the mornibg. And in the 52 hukams of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, there is a hukam to do kirtan sohila at night.

Satriakal,
I am here because I have heard lot of people saying "just reading bani is of no use" this is totally insult to Guru Granth sahibji and our Guruji. what is wrong with you all people . I just want to tell people whoever think's this, is wrong according to me. Bani is sakti , ek ek sabhad bani da sakhti hai. whoever enchants whether he/she knows it properly or not doesn't matter still he gets blessings of Guruji. people think bani is just a mere word.
and about timmings rules are rules we all should follow these path timings for sikh discpline as Guruji taught us. and other than that we can do path anytym.

Waheguruji ka khalsa,
Waheguruji di fateh.

I think generally we do the panj bania in the morning and rehras before sun set and then kirtan sohila at night. I believe that the misconception happens when people limit themselves to only this paath because we can do as much paath as we want as long as it's more then the nitnim of the rehat. So make sure you stick to these timings however maybe repeat certain paath throughout the day so your understanding develops and it helps to memorize them aswell
