Developed beard patches under one side * Alopecia aerta bar

Sat Shri Akal !

I am 23 years old lives in New Delhi .From the past 1 or 2 months I am having patches in beard on the right side of beard.I do have gud hairs on both sides of my beard but amazingly from the last 1 or 2 months my beard hairs started falling day by day only from one side. Initially I thought it will automatically get cured as I use Simco hair fixer to fix my beard hair . So I started to open my beard hairs as I can more most. Started using oil on hair. But by time I today there is very less hairs on my right side of beard. It looks bad.

I searched and consult one of the dermatologist , he is is asking me to shave off my beard to operate the problem named Alopecia aerta barbie . Please help me anyone I m from gursikh family. I can't shave off my my beard hairs. I m getting in depression day by day. Please suggest for any other solution or help me in finding a good sikh dermatologist who understand this problem in a better way

How do you tie your beard ? do u use pins ?

Then its probably because of that, i had started to get it as well but immediately moved to using a small rubber band and haven't looked back. Using that is much more convenient as well

Try using rubber band, its pins that cause most of this misery, generally our fathers use thread which is why they never came across this issue

Here are my suggestions
- remove stress of rubber bands, fixco etc. (use bobby pins instead, try conditioner)
- eat well (high protein, low gi foods, supplements) and workout
- apply minoxidil to the thinning areas (rogaine etc.)

It's probably not as bad as you think it is. Sometimes we see ourselves a lot differently to how others see us.
the right side of my beard (and head) has always had less hair than my left. I am losing the hair on top of my head, I have seen 2 doctors (a dermatologist and a hair specialist) because I was worried it was from traction alopecia but I was told it's simply male baldness and the traction has made it a bit worse but isn't the cause.

Here are a few things to consider.

a] Causes of alopecia
- at times there can be no specific reason
- traction i.e. pulling of hair out especially if tied too hard
- stress: at times this can also cause hair loss
- local skin infections: a] ringworm b] folliculitis - inflammation of hair follicles that can at times lead to localised hair loss - again unlikely in your case as you would have noted the initial inflammation of the hair follicles c] Piedra - another fungal skin infection but highly unlikely in your case as the skin is usually very nodular
- autoimmune problems such as thyroid problems, pernicious anaemia and diabetes can also at times be associated with hair loss. See a local doctor and have blood tests to exclude these at least

b] Treatment is varied depending upon the cause. Local skin infections would be treated appropriately depending upon the cause. At times, local intra-lesion steroid injections, or topical steroid cream, or topical minoxidil is used. Topical immunotherapy or PUVA [light] treatment is another option but only is used in severe cases.

SHAVING your beard is NOT the answer. I am very surprised that it was suggested to you by a doctor !!

first of all I would like to thanks everyone who spent tyme to understand my problem and gave their suggestions. Thank you so much Sikhnet for giving such a great way of connecting the sikh panth.

So if I start with the Nikal Singh kanakpuria conments.I would like to tell him that i never used pins to tie my beard ever , from the day I started tie my beard, I always used rubber band to tie my beard.

second , Rusty_sim rply had made me lil bit confident as he already faced this like situation. So my brother u suggested me to use bobby pins, so i will start using it instead of rubbee bands.Can u please let me is this Minoxidil available in all the locality medical stores.. I mean is it easily available.

@ Biriabc Brother I will do check with some good docter for the real cause of this problem.

Minoxidil can be purchased in a pharmacy but is widely available online under the brand name Rogaine as a foam or liquid. There is also plenty of generic, cheaper minoxidil available. Some information about minoxidil can be found here http://www.dermnetnz.org/treatments/minoxidil.html They're not entirely sure how it helps hairloss but it could be due to potassium ion channels. I'd be cautious if you have heart problems because minoxidil is used as a vasodilator but the topical stuff has such low absorption very little will enter your blood stream.

If you have traction alopecia then it might be irreversible so it's best to try to remove as much stress on the hair as possible. I understand you want to make your beard look tight and tidy but try avoid using fixco, rubber bands etc. Also again it's probably not as bad as you think!

Hi dear
I m also suffering from this autoimmune disease.
Perhaps this is not curable. Caz ur own immune system attacks hair focils on certain parts of facial hairs.
I'm in USA and went for a lot of screening.
It can be controlled but there is no proven medicine that can cure it.
I'm now doing yoga and making sure that oxygen and blood circulates through my face.
My 2 cents .. Avoid any multi vitamins and do excercise.

Exercise is good, and change diet! Also use conditioner!
