Well, I'm not too familiar with Punjabi/Indian/Sikh relationship traditions and taboos, but if I recall correctly, men and women from the same villages wouldn't get married, since you would treat members of the opposite sex as your siblings, so getting married to them would be very weird. This applies to people with the last surname as well, because back when people used to be all about that farming life, they wouldn't move (obviously because they didn't want to leave their ancestral lands) and moving to another village was rare. Since people never moved (and transportation was expensive) most people in villages and of the same surname would be related as well. This tradition has carried into the modern age, although its rather obsolete, since people move more often, and live in cities where they aren't related to people w/ the same surname.

Does this make sense?

Differs family to family in Punjabi Sikh and Hindu communities. In general it is paternal family lineage which is followed for matrimonial alliances (bride and bridegroom should not have same paternal surname).

kaurmajajan Ji,

Traditionally its not allowed, one cannot marry a person that has the same last name as mother or father. This is not backward thinking but is based on science, a mechanism to avoid in breeding and genetic diseases.

There is always a deep wisdom hidden behind these traditions and principles. So you should follow them.

as far as it isn't prohibited by the law or no worse consequences are defined by the science (like frequent first cousin marriages are no good). You are good to go !
