Scared about university

Postby Guest » Mon Sep 17, 2012 5:50 am

WJKK WJKF

I've been feeling really worried lately...

I'm starting university soon, and although it is one of the top universities, one of the drawbacks to this, is the fact that there aren't many Sikhs there. I feel as if I'm going to feel isolated from everyone. The people there are going to be so different, I don't know how I will fit in.

I'm so nervous about fresher's week as well as the people I will live with, many students will go drinking/clubbing... I'm scared of feeling alone.

Just came here to see if anyone had any advice, or had been through something similar.

Thank you.

hey! congrats on ur acceptance! isn't it a great news? n u r still not enjoying ti to fullest!! that's human nature, what ever we get, we find anything else to worry about. That's what I do to, i wait for my result, i get great marks n I start worrying abt the next exam! darn! that's life but i make a point to stick to my own faith n not go out clubbing, drinking etc plz plz stay out of that don't fall for peer pressure or u will ruin ur whole career if u start doing drugs or drinking, i would rather be a nerd that a poor grade drunkard ... be firm n be urself! best of luck :)

Believe me when I say you won't be the same.

The peer pressure is huge and you will come to realise some things about life, which may change your outlook. It may even change your stance of your religion. I have some friends who went in as religious and it didn't take long for them to turn agnostic/athiest.

I think it's good to experiment before you start uni because I have mates that were super clean during high school but once they got to uni (and away from mum and dad), they had so much freedom that they got carried away (unconscious, stomach pumped from drinking too much, drugs etc.) In contrast, I have friends that already were exposed to some drinking/partying so when it came to uni, they eased into it ok because it wasn't new to them.

It's about balance but I know some people that party hard 3 nights a week and get straight A+ so Dr Kaur's conclusion that partying = bad grades isn't true for everyone

Thanks for your replies.

I think even if I was to 'experiment', it wouldn't change the fact that the whole going out drinking etc is just something I wouldn't feel right in doing. But I feel as if when I go to uni, it's like if I don't tag along I'll end up having no friends...

Universities are big places, so you should be able to find like minded individuals even if they are on a different course. Be yourself, there is no need to conform. If you run after people they will run away. Hold your ground and not only will you command respect, but also the friendship of others :-)

From my experience of all my life with the university, first a student at ivy league and then on faculty, university provides the best environment. It is learning and intellectual environment. With few exceptions, the students are there to study. They do drink at social events during break and is not really a problem.. More than drinking or other negative thinking focus on the fact that the primary goal of students is to learn and prepare for a career... So congratulations and I am sure you will do fine.
