A non-sikh friend of mine has seen the words "Guru Rakha" on someone's signature. He asked me for a proper definition, and I couldn't give it to him. :(

Can someone please assist me with a definition a non-sikh westerner could understand?

In plain terms , Guru Rakha means someone with whom the Guru is always present.
To a non-Indian, Guru can be equated to God to help him understand the meaning.

Guru = Gu + Ru. Gu= darkness, Ru= light. Guru = one who removes darkness with light. in other words, a teacher. in christian terms, a prophet.

Rakha= protector, keeper.

Guru Rakha means "the Guru is my protector."

Does it not sound Punjabi Translation/ Transliteration of Muslim form of departing greetings Khuda Hafiz , Allah Khair which literally means God take care of you and May God take care of your well being ?

Guru Rakha also means that Guru may protect you.

Wahe Guru jee Ka Khalsa, wahe Guru Jee Ki Fateh,
