Violence vs. Self-Sacrifice

Is there a connection between violence and self-sacrifice in Sikh understanding? Because I thought there was but I wonder how these ideas were expressed in the first two centuries of the panth?

Talk about anytime in the history of Sikh panth, violence has only been used to defend oneself or innocents, never for personal gain or property
