WSC-AR Launches Katrina Aid Campaign to Provide Relief from Hurricane Devastation; Urges Generous Contributions from Sikh Community

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 1, 2005

Contact: Dr. Tarunjit Singh, Secretary General, World Sikh Council - America Region, 614-210-0591, [email protected]

In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina and the continued human tragedy unfolding in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida, the World Sikh Council America Region (WSC-AR) is coordinating a national fundraising “Katrina Aid Campaign” to raise funds for providing relief and hope for those affected by this tragedy.

We appeal to Sikh Gurdwaras, organizations, and individuals to contribute generously to this effort by sending their financial contributions in US dollars payable to “World Sikh Council America Region” while earmarking them for “Katrina Aid Campaign” to:
World Sikh Council America Region
P.O. Box 3635
Columbus, Ohio 43210, USA

We especially call upon the more than one hundred Sikh Gurdwaras in the US to offer prayers of condolences and hope on Sunday, September 4, to collect community contributions, and to forward these contributions collectively to WSC-AR.

Contributions from Sikh organizations and individuals are also solicited. Please contribute as much as you can to put your faith values into action.

Pooling the financial contributions from across the country will allow the Sikh community to make a significant national impact on the relief efforts.

Funds contributed to this campaign will be donated to the American Red Cross's Hurricane 2005 Relief effort and other agencies providing direct relief to those affected by this tragedy. Contributors to this national campaign will be recognized by listing them on the WSC-AR website. Major contributors will be prominently acknowledged in public statements.

The Sikh Educational and Religious Foundation (a member of WSC-AR) has made the founding pledge of $1,000 towards the Katrina Aid Campaign.

WSC-AR is a representative and elected body of Sikh Gurdwaras and institutions in the United States. Its members include 31 Gurdwaras (Sikh places of worship) and 6 other Sikh institutions across the nation.
